Perry is the father of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry, a director. The first time she appeared on TV was two appearances on the show as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on The ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mom. Her parents did not allow her to start acting by her parents until old age, due to the pressure it would bring. Perry said that she felt shy to do any acting at the age of 16, but she began performing at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer from Boston University. Perry was able to begin her acting career as an actress in New York after graduation, performing in minor roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, her home-sickness forced Perry move back to California to work as a stage actress. Perry was a part of Broadway on Broadway in The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. In 2015, she performed with her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played a role in 9 episodes of The Family, an ABC film The Family in 2016. In 2017, she performed a role as a support in the ABC political drama Scandal which starred her father. In the same year, she was asked to play a younger version of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again acting as a younger version Mary Cooper's character. The actress was chosen for the role despite her close relationship with the character's family.
